JNI Joins EMC and Other Leading Fibre Channel Vendors to Develop World's First SAN Management Standard New Software Standard Key to Broad Deployment of Fibre Channel SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 1, 1999--JNI (formerly known as Jaycor Networks Inc.), Monday joined EMC Corp. (NYSE: EMC - news) and other leading Fibre Channel technology vendors in forming a new alliance to establish and promote standard ways of managing Fibre Channel-based storage area networks (SANs). The initiative, called The FibreAlliance, will develop and deploy a common approach to monitoring and controlling Fibre Channel-based components that reside on a SAN, such as host bus adapters, hubs, switches, routers, servers, and storage. The FibreAlliance will also market the specification to customers and non-member vendors, and submit it to independent standards bodies for consideration as an industry-wide standard. ''With our broad array of Fibre Channel products, we're acutely aware of the need for a common management standard,'' said Scott Ruple, vice president of marketing for JNI. ''By working to establish and support the standard, JNI and its partners are setting the stage for broader deployment of SAN Fibre Channel technology in corporate enterprise, along with applications where Fibre Channel is often used, such as video editing, web server, and banking and finance applications.'' ''Until now, customers have lacked common methods for effectively managing complex, heterogeneous SANs,'' said Robert Dutkowsky, EMC's executive vice president of markets and channels. ''JNI's participation in The FibreAlliance is vital to the success of creating a standard for Fibre Channel SAN management and enabling broad market adoption of the SAN model.'' Promoting Fibre Channel Standards The FibreAlliance is based on members' common support for the emerging Fibre Channel interconnect technology, which is a key element of customers' fast-growing deployment of SANs. SANs offer high-speed interconnects between servers, storage, and high-performance clients, allowing for ''any-to-any'' connections and consolidation among hundreds of servers and storage systems in a networked environment. Today, even though the Fibre Channel interconnect is an International Standards Organization-based industry standard, there is no commonly accepted method for managing the elements in a Fibre Channel-based SAN, such as monitoring the elements of the SAN and launching alerts in the event of a problem. Working cooperatively, The FibreAlliance will develop and implement a single standard method for performing these and other SAN management functions. About JNI JNI, a leading vendor of Fibre Channel products, offers a complete line of high-performance, high-quality Fibre Channel adapter cards, hubs, routers, switches, and software. With headquarters in San Diego, JNI's leading-edge technologies target Storage Area Networks (SANs) and a broad range of networked storage applications, including video editing, banking/finance, government, and corporate enterprise, addressing the need for extremely reliable, high-speed network connections between clients, servers and storage devices.
