• The Telecommunications Industry Association and several of the world's leading standards organizations last week concluded
a week-long session that resulted in the creation of a third-generation partnership project. Partners in the project refer to it as
"3GPP2" because it is the second such effort to accelerate 3G standards.

*Handset sales* Meanwhile, the chips keep falling where they will. VLSI nearly up and running, pouring money into Qualcomm's royalty division. 1998 was the year cdmaOne really took off. 1999 is going to be great with MSM3000 arrived. Subscribers are on the way to 30 million since that many ASICs have been shipped and they don't keep those on the shelf for 6 months.

The end of 1998 must have seen about 23,141,593 cdmaOne subscribers as predicted by the amazingly accurate predictor of such things early in the year. Which represents faster growth than was expected by the industry as late as August.

Qualcomm hasn't yet announced the shipment of the 10 millionth handset. That landmark must be not far away now. I assume they won't just ignore it like post number 20,000 on this thread.

There must now be about 25 million, so Qualcomm's market share would be about 40%. Not bad considering there are about 10 handset brands available now.

Okay, memory test:
Qualcomm
Samsung
Motorola
Kyocera
Nokia
Maxon
LG
Pantech
Pansonic
Toshiba
Denso
Fujitsu
...I think another couple of Korean ones, but can't think of them and I DID cheat on the last four, going here to remind myself:
ddi.co.jp

Any missing? 40% market share with that many competitors [all paying extorquerationate royalties don't forget] is pretty good going.

PS: It's amazing! Q! was supposed to be $80 today...must be a dip leading to a powerful closing rally. Sure, the buy in the 40's sell in the 50's [it used to be] crowd are having a little flurry, but they are selling in the 60s and they will fail to buy in the 40's or even 50's then kick themselves for believing the myth. Like Ramsey's vacation effect - fun while it lasts. EOM.
