By Steve Gelsi, CBS MarketWatch
Last Update: 11:50 AM ET Feb 1, 1999 Internet Daily

NEW YORK, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Investors turned up their noses Monday at Perfumania and America Online as the companies debuted rival, online perfumes.

Perfumania (PRFM) dipped after it said its offering brand name and designer fragrances via the Internet. Shares fell 3 1/8 to 8 on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, America Online (AOL) slipped 1 3/16 to 174 9/16 as it rolled out plans to offer Miss Piggy's new signature fragrance "Moi" via the Fragrance Counter, an online retailer of designer cosmetics.

By visiting the Fragrance Counter on AOL, Miss Piggy fans can purchase Moi and get fragrance advice from the porcine beauty.

The Miami, Fla.-based Perfumania said in early January it planned to go online for the Valentine's Day shopping season.

The company will cross-promote its Web site at its 290 discount retail stores.

> SME is where it is because it missed a 13 million dollar interest payment <

Sean, I agree with all you said about SME except I think SME made their payment on time (Due date Jan 15, 1999. They made 13 million payment on Jan. 14, 1999). Speaking for competition, PRFM fights with all major dept. stores with a major disadvange. Most brand names which sell at Macy, Filene, J.C. Penny, and so on are simplely are not available at PRFM. If you want count customers, go to a mall and you won't see many in PRFM store. Not because they don't like PRFM store, but PRFM don't have what they want. On-line store does not have solve this problem at all.
