I agree with your basic analysis. As with all history there is no one cause for each effect. There was an animosity toward the wealthy southerners, it was perceived that wealthy northerners worked hard for their gains while the southerners just inherited their wealth and then looked down their noses at the northern industrialists. Radical reconstruction was also meant to be punative.
