Court Judgment Enforces 3Com's XJACK Connector and Digital Line Guard Patents; Settlement Underscores 3Com Rights to Exclusive PC Card Technologies BW - 02:04 p.m Feb 01, 1999 Eastern SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 1, 1999--3Com Corporation today announced that it has settled a patent infringement lawsuit with Simple Technology, Inc. ("STI") involving 3Com's patented XJACK(R) and Digital Line Guard technologies. Under the settlement, STI has agreed not to contest the validity and infringement of 3Com's patents-in-suit. The United States District Court for the District of Utah entered a Consent Judgment finding 3Com's patents-in-suit valid and infringed. An XJACK connector is a patented 3Com technology that eliminates carrying or losing extra modem or LAN connecting cables. Built with a high-strength industrial plastic, the connector works much like a ball point pen by clicking in or clicking out to a reveal a sturdy RJ-11 phone or RJ-45 Ethernet connector. Over six million Megahertz(R) PC Cards have shipped with XJACK connectors since 1993. Digital Line Guard is a patented 3Com technology that protects the PC Card, and potentially the PC, from damage when accidentally connected to digital or PBX phone lines. Digital Line Guard is a significant value-added feature that protects the investment of 3Com customers who buy communications products for their mobile workforces. "Features like the XJACK connector and Digital Line Guard clearly demonstrate 3Com's innovation and leadership in mobile design," said Rich Redelfs, vice president of marketing for 3Com's mobile communications division. "This judgment sends a clear message to our competitors that we defend our intellectual property vigorously. Our customers know that you can only get 3Com reliability, performance and exclusive features by buying 3Com products." Redelfs also noted that some hardware OEMs may use an XJACK connector and Digital Line Guard if the technologies are properly licensed from 3Com. As a result of the settlement of the patent infringement lawsuit, STI has discontinued making or selling products that use 3Com's patented XJACK connector and Digital Line Guard technologies.
