It's interesting to think about your points:
1) T/TWX deal is in fact a ploy to spoil the possibility of AOL enagaging TWX. Since T got in first, AOL will have no chance to partner with them. I kinda agree with this. At the very moment I was very nervous about AOL's possible alliance with TWX, T came in to smash AOL's hope. It can't be a coincidence.

2) Your point: Cable telephone is such a thin margin project so T is not interested. Their sole interest is to create the opportunity for other more profitable broadband applications such as Internet and Video. I don't think cable telephony is a thin margin project that T is not interested in. Cable telephony can be cheaper. But the public interest can be huge. Who don't want to save a few bucks calling Mom and Dad? T can still derive a lot of revenue and earnings from cable telephony.

But, it's kinda sad to think that cable telephony is beyond @Home's reach.

@Home Starts Charge To Cross The Chasm

@Home Starts Charge To Cross The Chasm

Excite Purchase, Backbone Expansion and Possible WorldNet
Deal Pave Way for @Home to Become Mass-Market Player

During @Home Network executive presentations, audiences are
often inundated with buzzwords borrowed from techno-marketing
guru Geoffrey Moore. In Moore-speak, @Home execs explain the
need to enter the "bowling alley," "cross the chasm," and get "inside
the tornado" to achieve "gorilla status." Translation? @Home hopes to
move cable Internet access from a niche service into the mainstream,
yielding rapid revenue growth and securing a dominant position for the
company in the broadband market.

While @Home has experienced its share of growing pains, the
company made a series of bold maneuvers in January that may put the
high-flying start-up on the path to truly become a first-tier Internet
player.
