The marriage penalty is somewhat of a myth. Sure two people earning similar middle class salaries pay more - due to the steeply progressive tax structure.

On the other hand people like me, with one spouse not earning anything, actually enjoy a marriage bonus.

I would gladly give it up for a simple fair tax system. Pull it out by the roots.
