Daniel, sometimes the signal to noise ratio does get out of hand. Let me relate an experience from this weekend. On 4 separate instances I was unjustifiably taunted and called rude names by different posters on this thread. I knew they were intruders and simply clicked on next instead of respond. I ignored them because it was readily apparent they were not my verbal peers and would lose a joust with me. But I saved the thread having to witness that spectacle by simply biting my tongue and carrying on. And guess what? They disappeared upon being ignored.

I used to send reminders to posters that got locked in bouts of personal attacks but that is an unpleasant role and several took offense so I keep quiet now. But think about it. Did anyone really like the endless dialogues with Big Tex and others? Each time we respond to intruders we are inviting them back on the thread for another post. I think it is OK to veer off topic once in a while. It is all part of the dynamic of conversation and interesting things come up that way. And for some, trading and posting is your full-time job. Others have a limited amount of time to research each day

When the chit-chat becomes endless out of control public rants just because someone pushed one of our buttons then it leads to the situation where you log on and discover so many posts that you can't possibly read them all so you may miss something newsworthy. So, if you just can't let something pass why not Private Message it? And if you really believe that your response is particularly clever enough to be made public another powerful tool is to reply not to the poster but to someone else on the thread speaking about the poster in the 3rd person.

Anyway, conversations will always end up in a state of disarray but each of us can take a small step to yank it back when it becomes a shouting match. Just a thought....

And a reminder of how Anthony would like to see this thread. It is his domain and we really should respect his wishes while visiting. Please think about the following when posting and contemplate the valuable resource we are privy to by having discovered this thread:
