Good point.

Note that DEC/Compaq have released the Alpha 21264 at 500 MHz - SLOWER THAN THE 600 MHz of its predecessor - the 21164. A bad sign !

All is not well with current & future Alpha chips - and Compaq knows that better than anyone else.

There in lies the biggest threat from CPQ to INTC. On one hand CPQ seems to be recruiting for Alpha, on the other they have stopped publishing the Digital Technical Journal so they could potentially have stealth plans in the future for Alpha or they could just be supporting it for the interim. With all this FTC stuff overhanging, it would be hard for Intc to twist CPQ's arm on Xeon supply in any observable manner.
