I did not hear Maria's comment so I don't want to propagate a rumor, but I have an idea that is perhaps not too far fetched. Hewlett-Packard now builds all the PCs sold by Unisys, which has transformed itself from a computer hardware company to a computer services company and I believe is a Dell partner providing on site service for Dell PCs. If you look at IBMs SEC filings, their hardware business is shrinking while their service business is growing. Also the strongest part of their hardware business is mainframes, which are actually staging a bit of a comeback as database servers. They admit that their PC business has been struggling to make money.

What if IBM followed in the footsteps of Unisys? They could not have HP build PCs for them because HP is their biggest competitor for big iron, but if IBM got out of the PC business, Dell would no longer be a competitor and would make a great partner. IBM could also be a great partner for Dell, providing consulting and integration services that Dell has no experience with or expertise in.

Just a thought.

Ken
