I just think the PC's that retailers will be selling to Mom & Pop will be the all-in-one package of USB printer/keyboard/mouse (and that 'optional' monitor <15-pin>). They're gonna keep trimming the design to keep the cost < $500.

From the Win2000 PnP tech docs:
"...In the new architecture, bus drivers have moved out of the hardware abstraction layer (HAL) to coordinate with changes and extensions made to existing kernel-mode components, such as the Executive, device drivers, and HAL. Bus drivers are generally provided by Microsoft."

It's true, HAL is always the last to know...

and about that last sentence:
"Bus drivers are generally provided by Microsoft."
No wonder they were having problems with those pods.
