Not all cable companies offer cable modems. If your does then they'll run a cable to your house and then you have to install cable network card in your computer.

Most cable companies charge a connect fee and a monthly charge of between 40 and 50 a month for unlimited use. The nice thing about it is you are always on: you don't have to dial in and all of that other stuff.

Ken,

I don't have cable TV either, but Time Warner in our area will service non-subscribers with internet access for $40/month. Installation was free, but that was a special deal.

It really is fast.
