How long did it take to get your broker on the phone on October 8?

My wife uses Waterhouse for online trading because of their low commission, but also because they have an office in town. That came in handy when she needed to cover a margin call in October. They usually answer the phone within a few minutes and when their web site is too slow or not responding (far too often), they will do the trade over the phone at the online price.

In a real panic situation we probably could not get them on the phone, but she could rarely get her full service broker from Everen on the phone at any time. It seems he was usually at Starbucks scouting for new customers.

Waterhouse also claims to have software that lets you dial direct into their system, bypassing the internet, although I suspect the number may be busy when the web site is down. I have not got the software yet. As a last resort they have a touch tone telephone trading system. She has not tried that either. Of course she will never sell Dell in a market panic, but she might well be in a panic to buy some more :)
