Joseph Farah apparently wrote, quoted by Darrell Youngblood: In fact, those who dare address such issues are quickly denounced as paranoid "extremists."

I agree with you, Darrell, that this plan needs to be scrutinized. However, just because somebody brings up reasonable doubts about the civil liberties impact of Clinton's "commander-in-chief for the defense of the continental United States" proposal doesn't mean he is not paranoid. One can be correct and paranoid at the same time, the trouble is people tend to dismiss the paranoids and listen to the "reasonable" ones, even if the reasonable-sounding arguments are fallacious (whoa, that almost sounded like fellatio, heh-heh ;-)

I expect the ACLU and other groups, some of them on the right wing, will oppose any infringement of civil liberties that occurs or is expected to occur under such a system. The forces for freedom from government control in this country are quite robust and come from a wide spectrum of political beliefs. E.g. the ACLU on the left and the Libertarian Cato Institute on the right. (I'm using the terms left and right loosely; they don't necessarily apply to civil liberties issues.)

My point is, here is a case where defenders of civil liberties need to bury the hatchet and work together to avert a crisis. Name-calling ("liberal" vs. "conservative") will only distract us from the underlying issues.
