Sony Unveils Digital Camera with 2.1 Million Pixel CCD

nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com

February 3, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Sony Corp. said it will launch the DSC-F55K digital still camera with a 2.11-million-pixel charge-coupled device (CCD) on April 1. ...

Sony adopted its original flash memory card, called Memory Stick, as the recording medium for the DSC-F55K. The camera is the first of its kind that will accommodate the memory stick.

Here is the first of the 2+ million pixel cameras I said would be rolling out. The pixel count will only increase from here and Iomega's puny 40MB Flop! capacity quite frankly will not be able to handle the job. This is why CompactFlash and other solid state solutions are experiencing rapid capacity growth (now up to 96MB per card). In fact, a 192MB card could be introduced later this year.

There is no way in Hell that Sony will use Iomega's Flop! drive in their cameras. Sony likes keeping everything proprietary, and to use their OWN technology--like the 1.44 floppy and safe, reliable solid state Memory Stick.
