[Some BH6 trivia]

Mushkin called to follow up on a recent purchase. Learned that the printing on the bh6 board for the HD light pins etc is not accurate. Go with what the manual says.

Drive Trays...Thanks for the report, ZP. I just got the Antec tray yesterday, and am very impressed. It has significantly more room inside the cartridge than the generic models, and the trays are all aluminum/tin with simple ventilation filters. I'll be replacing all my cheap trays with these, I think. FWIW.

Removable Harddrive trays and.. ROMO's

My first impressions of the Antec and DataPort trays (not Dstor as indicated in one of my posts).

I have not installed any trays yet. I am waiting for an 8.4 gig Maxtor from NECX..backordered but due in today? I am opting for the 8.4 gig primary drive so I do not have to fight NT during the install. The ROMO drives ( Thanks Clarence.. ro-moveable..rotate..remove..) will probably be more 17 gig Maxtors..I already have two and matched drives seems the way to go for the ROMO's. My IBM Deskstar 6.4 gig drives do not have an adequate jumper configuration. One would have to change a jumper on the master if the slave were present vs non present.

The Antecs are as Dave described. My biggest concern is the cooling. If one were to use the tray in a machine with open space above and below the drive I do not see a problem. If the tray has physical restriction above and below..likely as in CD and CDR drive adjacent) I do not see how any air will flow over the drive. I anticipate using all five 5 1/4 in bays in the Super Micro case. Antec has a case with six external 5 1/4 in bays. I still would not want to lose a bay. My preference would be a case with all drive bays accessible from the outside.

DataPort recoverdata.com has a lot of different options. I opted for the V series. Three primary reasons..1) Ball bearing fan and 2) option for alternate drives..LS120 or zip. 3) Aluminum frame and tray...and they sell to California, for some strange reason many vendors do not sell the removables to California??

One can choose plastic or aluminum components.

I opted for aluminum frame and tray. The internal 40 pin connector..the one the tray uses over and over again..is similar if not the same as the connector on the Antec. Other than that there is not a lot of similarity. The DataPort ..in addition to being $60 for the metal version vs $13 for the Antec metal/plastic..street value..is naturally much heavier. Heat should transfer well into the frame. The top and bottom coverplates have no vents (Antec has vents top and bottom). All air is directed out the back..intake is just under the front handle..I may reverse the fan as the inlet is not filtered.

Interestingly the top and bottom plates can be left off the tray (the top plate can be left off the Antec). This results in open space around the drive. Air can rise freely through the open space. With this configuration plastic and no fan would most likely be adequate. I do not know if the plastic trays have removable tops and bottoms..I know how to find out<g>
