Ancor Communications Pledges Support for The FibreAlliance; Management Standard Key to Widespread Storage Network Adoption, Company Says

MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Ancor Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: ANCR), a leading Fibre Channel switch provider, said The FibreAlliance can lead the way to widespread storage area network (SAN) adoption in 1999 by enhancing SAN management.

EMC Corporation announced the formation of The FibreAlliance today to establish and promote standard ways of managing Fibre Channel-based SANs. The open, multi-vendor association plans to develop an engineering specification describing the framework to which vendors may develop and deliver FibreAlliance-compliant products and solutions starting this year.

"Storage equipment interoperability is important, but it isn't the complete solution," said Carla Kennedy, Ancor's vice president of marketing. "Customers trusting terabytes of mission-critical data to their storage networks want to know they have effective control over that data. As a Fibre Channel switch manufacturer, we want to make sure customers can monitor and control bandwidth requirements, fail-over options, and data integrity. The FibreAlliance will act swiftly to ensure that level of SAN management exists."

"Fibre Channel pioneers such as Ancor Communications bring deep credibility to The FibreAlliance," said Robert Dutkowsky, EMC's Executive Vice President of Markets and Channels. "Ancor's GigWorks MKII switches play an important role in advancing SAN performance, reliability and affordability. Ancor's FibreAlliance work will enhance its ability to meet the growing demand of customers to deploy complete, integrated, easily managed SAN solutions." Ancor markets its GigWorks MKII 8- and 16-port Fibre Channel switches to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and has signed OEM agreements with Forefront Graphics, Prisa Networks, and INRANGE Technologies Corporation, a unit of General Signal Corporation, in the last two months. Ancor also has a technology licensing agreement with INRANGE.
