This just in Overheard at tech '99 conference Harvey Scull, Tellabs' (TLAB) vice president of advanced business development, said that, in order to develop a strong public network, the industry must focus on making it "ultrareliable," and it should be competitively priced with current phone services. He added that the key to the public network's success will be clear voice services. "If you follow the money," Scull said, "the money's in voice." FULL TEXT @ cbs.marketwatch.com

Yes Cablespan is the product that allows telephone service over coax networks. (look at the Tellabs web site, a lot of info) Internationally..."LISLE, Ill., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Tellabs (Nasdaq: TLAB) announced today it has signed a three-year contract, estimated to be worth more than $150 million, with Priority Telecom to deploy telephony-over-cable services in the Netherlands and France. Priority Telecom, the newly launched CLEC(competitive local exchange carrier) and integrated telephony services division of United Pan-Europe Communications (UPC), selected Tellabs' CABLESPAN solution as its broadband access platform to allow it to deliver integrated voice and high-speed data services over a hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) network..." Also I have seen Mr. Birck comment a few times in different interviews on a company A2000 in Holland that has one of the larger cable telephony networks in the world that Tellabs is involved in. Domestically..."Lisle, Ill. -- MediaOne, the third-largest cable operator in the United States, has selected the Tellabs CABLESPAN 2300 universal telephony distribution system for commercial deployment of telephone services over hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) networks. Using the CABLESPAN system, MediaOne plans to offer integrated delivery of telephone and cable TV services in selected MediaOne franchise areas that have been identified, but not yet announced, for telephone deployment in 1998. The CABLESPAN system has undergone an extensive product evaluation process conducted by MediaOne earlier this year. The two companies are currently negotiating a contract under which Tellabs will supply a complete solution consisting of the CABLESPAN product, its element management system (EMS), and various Tellabs SelectSM professional services to MediaOne. Over a three-year period, the contract is estimated to be worth up to $100 million." As for the ATT & TCI deal. I know Lucent no longer offers a product in the cable telephony area. At one time they did but they abandoned the business. There are three big players in the cable telephony hardware world...Tellabs, Nortel, and ADC. Hope this answers some of your questions...TS
