I agree. I would start by eliminating superfluous departments, in phased stages:Education, Transportation, Energy, and HUD. I would take all useful functions performed by these and put them elsewhere. Then, we should take Treasury, Labor, and Commerce and create a Department of Economic Affairs, basically taking a few useful things from Labor and Commerce ( such as statistical analysis) and giving them to Treasury.I would simplify the IRS by introducing a flat tax. I would place federal law enforcement functions under the jurisdiction of the Justice Department, essentially eliminating the Bureau of Tobacco, Alcohol, and Firearms and the Secret Service, and making their duties part of the FBI. That is just to indicate a start. As a practical matter, I am sure that actual Republican proposals will be more modest.
