But the idea of providing broadband relays for space data is exciting. I can envision the day when we have the equivalent of NASA's TDRSS data relay satellite in orbit around the Moon, Mars, Jupiter, and some other bodies. That way, interplanetary probes could save weight and power (which = $$) on their comm systems and antennas, because they could relay to a much closer object instead of directly to Earth. That concept is already in use for some interplanetary probes to Mars and Jupiter, but the current comm relays are not meant to last through several missions.
