Seybold and Alan A. Reiter's Wireless Data University (WDU) will present an expanded program on mobile computing and wireless data communications on Sunday, Feb. 7, immediately prior to the opening of the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association's Wireless 1999 Convention and Exposition, Feb. 8-10. The events will take place at New Orleans' Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Participants in Wireless Data University will choose from three morning tracks, one each by featured presenters Andrew M. Seybold, Alan A. Reiter and Barney Dewey. Seybold will cover the basics of wireless, discussing radio systems and types as well as the differences between analog and digital systems. He will review the types of wireless data systems, technologies such as the new Bluetooth short-range radio connectivity solution, the status of the wireless data industry, and its evolving prospects. Reiter's track will explore the marriage of the Internet and intranets with wireless data communications. The session will include an update on the industry; integration of the Internet and wireless technologies, including paging, packet data and dial-up wireless networks; and how to use the Internet as an information transport, as a source of information sources, and as a marketing tool. Dewey will review the marketing ramifications of wireless data technology, presenting a market analysis framework, identifying marketing challenges and discussing strategic and tactical considerations. He will review wireless data opportunities, analyze past failures and successes, and provide insight into the implementation of the technology in terms of marketable products. The afternoon session will open with a plenary session that interrelates the three morning tracks, followed by presentations by five innovators from the wireless data industry, each of which will discuss and/or demonstrate their respective offerings. The guest presenters include: -- WirelessKnowledge, the new joint venture of [ Qualcomm Corp. ] and [ Microsoft Corp. ] , that will provide access to multiple networks from multiple types of devices; -- Infowave Wireless Messaging Inc., will demonstrate its technique for enabling wireless messaging through corporate Microsoft Exchange servers; -- Research In Motion will demo its just-announced BlackBerry end- to-end Microsoft Exchange Server wireless email solution. BlackBerry provides mobile workers with the ability to send and receive email from their existing email account as well as synchronization to users' calendars, phone books and task lists. -- On Line Anywhere, a new company that provides products and services to bring Web content to a wide array of non-PC devices; -- Symbian, a joint venture of Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia and Psion Group that has been formed to direct and license the use of the EPOC third-generation operating system for mobile ROM-based computing; and -- NEDA, a newly formed consortium of Internet providers in New England. Founded in 1996 as an independent event held in conjunction with CTIA events, Wireless Data University is now included as part of the official CTIA conference schedule.
