Concerning today's press release re Vice President - Brand Strategy This represents a significant clarification of the Internet vision. First, correctly, the position is not one of strictly marketing, advertising or sales but —*Brand Strategy*. In the world of merchandising, brand identification has near tangible value and is ferociously fostered and defended. Second, the NY City location of the "Web-based video services group" is significant. In the world of marketing, NY City is the hub of media communications. Third, in Mr. Marione's words: ''I see the unequalled communications power of video combining with the global reach of the Internet to create an exciting new medium for targeted marketing,'' stated Marione. ''My goal is to build for Ampex and its strategic partners the pre-eminent brand that consumers worldwide will look to for Web-based video,'' he added." [and ] "Commenting on Marione's appointment, Bramson said, ''Ray brings us the top-level consumer marketing expertise that building the team to create our Web-video brands requires.." My take on this, and notice we still have not seen the full vision, is not so much as an Ampex consumer product per se, but a vertically integrated service - equipment, know how and delivery, for any Internet video centric delivery. "Your site or mine." Initially, the appeal would focus on broadband enabled customers (business / government) but, as availability of bandwidth increases, to the full worldwide consumer populace. Some more tidbits from the release: " ...building a marketing-oriented organization to leverage its digital image technology and expertise internally and through selected strategic investments,"... [and] ...evaluate additional technology initiatives and strategic investments to achieve its goal of developing integrated audio, video and electronic commerce offerings for delivery over the World Wide Web. It's strategy is to establish an early market presence in broadband Web applications and to position itself to expand the range, content and quality of its Web-video offerings in line with future increases in the availability of high-speed Internet access." Again, this is a very much equipment and expertise point of view. It could be THE only business model which will render Internet profits. Ed Perry
