The standard method of purchasing bullion is to go to a house such as Blanchard. The whole bullion system is quite expensive given the bid ask spreads, commission and shipping/insurance costs. Unfortunately that is how the game is played and Blanchard is a longstanding survivor in the business and has a decent if not impeccable reputation. I recently checked the New Orleans better business bureau and Blanchard came up pretty clean. This contrasts to some of the other bullion traders that I have checked out who don't even register with their respective BBB. In sum Blanchard is in the top tier cost wise in an expensive game. They also seem reputable. As to coinage, a good bet is the American Eagle in a mix of ounces, quarters and tenths. These coins are actually US legal tender and some say, that according to current technicalities, they are the only numismatic coins insofar as the US Treasury definition of such. In the event gold is ever called in again as in the early thirties, this designation may possibly serve as some protection. Good luck, as they say talk is talk and in the final analysis, their is just no feeling that quite describes the sense of security that comes with having a stash of the yellow metal where you can see it, feel it and use it to flip when you have one of those earth shaking decisions to make.
