I don't know if the markups are the same in the States, but here in Canada, Starbucks and Second Cup amputate 2 limbs for every drink you order. They charge $3 for a frickin glass of juice...and I buy it!!

With that kind of markup you can't go wrong.

For anyone interested in coffee shop markups:

The following are based on a popular coffee shop in a small town
on the Oregon coast - retail prices are considerably lower than
found at most Starbucks or other major coffee chains in larger cities.
Costs do NOT include overhead (including labor and capital outlay)
- but this should give you an idea of the profit margins on the items listed
and the direct cost of all ingredients including to-go cups and lids.

Item Retail Cost Mark-Up Over Cost

16oz Brewed Coffee 1.60 .406 294 %
Single Shot Espresso 1.45 .278 421 %
Double Cappucino 2.10 .601 249 %
Cafe Mocha 2.90 .823 252 %
Espresso Topped w/Brewed 2.85 .531 436 %

I think that gives you an idea of the profit potential.
Trust me, there is plenty in those profit margins for overhead,
labor and capital expenditures.
