NEW YORK -- Different from the hurricane that the Clinton Administration blew through the real
estate investment trust world last year with its controversial paired share REIT legislation, this
year the Administration is making a proposal that many in the sector enthusiastically welcome.

The proposal will allow REITs to expand into non-real estate services, such as selling internet,
maid and cable services to tenants, providing landscaping services or offering renters insurance to
not only third parties but to their own tenants. For storage REITs, it could mean offering
pick-up-and-delivery services to their public storage units.
