CIEN, AFCI, CSCO; picked from the AFCI thread for your consideration (I'm holding AFCI)

"On the opposite side of the coin, the Lucent-Ascend deal is also likely to push Cisco into expanding its product base to compete in both the voice and data markets. Analyst Timothy Savageaux of Volpe Brown Whelan notes Lucent's purchase of Ascend, 'puts pressure on Cisco to increase their products in other areas.'
Cisco's CEO John Chambers told analysts in November that Cisco, which built itself in part through acquisitions, planned to acquire between 10 and 12 companies in 1999, half for companies whose
equipment carries both voice and data. Among the companies which top analysts' potential target lists are Ciena (Nasdaq: CIEN) and Advanced Fibre Communications (Nasdaq: AFCI).
Anton Wahlman of Warburg Dillion Read thinks that Ciena would make a good acquisition to a large multinational looking to gain U.S. market share (read Ericsson or Alcatel) or a strong position in DWDM technology (Cisco). Advanced Fibre is a pure-play in the high-growth digital loop carrier market and has been experiencing good penetration of the Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) market.
These acquisitions should be expected to garner a premium similar to the one that Ascend received.
As Craig Johnson, principal analyst at Pita Group, puts it, 'Cisco doesn't have a lot of this core stuff that everyone else has. They're going to have to find a mid-tier player to get closer ties to phone companies."
