<<Chris Storm, Novell's senior vice president for corporate strategy, told investors at the NationsBanc Montgomery Securities tech conference that the company's BorderManager FastCache product provides an alternative to Inktomi's approach. Novell has marketed the FastCache line since December but only recently mentioned it as an alternative to Inktomi in a conference call.>>

AOL currently uses Inktomi software to cache a massive amount of the Internet, to cheaply improve "user experience" for its members. I ran a report on our web server log today to look at our "Top 50" users for January 1999, and all 50 were AOL Proxy Servers (different numbers) located in Reston, VA. 38% of our users for Jan 1999 were AOLers, and about 30% of those users who requested our pages had them retrieved from cache.

There are some real issues to be resolved here regarding skewing companies web reporting/analysis, but this does illustrate that there is a huge market for proxy servers out there now, and it will get bigger.
