From the 'Zen of Shorting'
During the life time of Chu Mei Ash, the master Japanese short, Japan was open to foreigners. It is said that Chu Mei Ash unlike many of his country men was much more cosmopolitan in his outlook and did not automatically assume everything Japanese was superior. He sought to learn as much as he could about the foreigners and was reported to be far more tolerant about the differences between his ways and theirs. We are fortunate to have an example of this recorded in the 'Zen of Shorting'.

This discussion was held between the master short and one of his students.
"Master," the student said, "I just met one of those Western Barbarians, he was at the waterfront. He has been in Japan for sometime and speaks our language."
"Really, little Toad, that is most unusual, you must have learned much from him." Said Chu Mei Ash.
"Your pardon, Master, but what is there to learn? He is a barbarian, I did speak with him for a while out of curiosity but I saw little he could teach me. It was an effort to even speak with him, he stank so."
"Little Toad," the Master said, "You forget all sailors are somewhat rank when leaving their ships. Water for bathing is scarce on board. You are unjustly critical I think."
"But Master, when I spoke of things of culture like music and food he was most ignorant. I spoke of the chef Le Cu Pah's baby back ribs and he just said,'Give me a joint of beef, some strong ale and a loaf of bread that is all I need.' And about music all he wanted to hear was tunes played on a fife, which is some sort of flute."
"One must first taste the great foods such as the superb dishes of Le Cu Pah to appreciate them. It does not mean we are superior because the Gods have favored us with the experience. And sailors cannot take a fine orchestra with lovely singing Geishas to sail with. Let us look at where we might be more similar. Did he speak of such things?
"Well Master, he did say they have a stock market in his country and he was invested in it."
"You see, Chu Mei Ash said, "Surely you can see the merit of this. I for one am impressed, this shows a refined country. What of shorting did you speak of that?"
"I thought of you Master, the student said, "And I asked him about shorting stocks and what rules they might have about it. He was appalled and said he had never heard of such a thing. He said no Christian country would ever allow it."
"Great Buddha!" Chu Mei Ash said, " What a greasy bunch of disgusting, and uncultured creatures they are."
