The fact of a small loss of seats is as nothing to the achievement of Republican control of both Houses after so many years, and Newt deserves the credit. He also deserves credit for being more of a man than Clinton when the good of the party dictated his resignation. You guys make too much of Newt's resignation. After having been turned into the boogie man by the Democrats, it is a wonder that Newt, who is not know for his thick skin, hung in there as long as he did. He screwed up some things, because of the difficulty of adjusting to leadership after being in the minority so long, but mostly because he proved to be a softy who trusted Clinton too much, and he got the shaft during the budget battle a few years ago. Still, he held onto most seats through '96 and '98, he got welfare reform through, and a budget moving towards balance, and I'd say he did okay.

re: Newt, actually pezz Newt saved himself by leaving when he did. I think hes the smartest of all the republicans actually. He left because he saw the writing on the wall from the Nov elections and he knew there was no way out for the republicans given the makeup of the republican congress (extreme right). His statement was that he left for the good of the party (and there was some truth to that) but mostly it was a personal decision - I give him credit for correctly reading the situation at least.
