Sector, of course the 'rumor' of CSCO 'partnering' w/MRV would help them alleviate some of their obvious product weaknesses.;-)

But then the ex. CEO of Xyplex, Michael Thurk, is now Executive
Vice President and General Manager of Ericsson's business unit Datacom Networks and IP Services.

This could play out several ways...I guess CSCO would make an OK partner for starters. I wonder if INTC is still trying to be a player in networking?;-)

Sector,

I think you are right on about CSCO, Sector. They publicly don't sound too gracious with their competitors, but I assume they know what is going on. They will make the appropriate acquisitions in the year ahead (~10) to get them somewhere in DWDM, Optically, and perhaps even with Fibre Channel. With the enterprise apparently slowing down (might not turn around till 2000 starts) CSCO always has to look for new growth areas in the build out of the Internet backbone.

I think the key is to find the companies that have to get sucked up/bought out. Mrvc down at these prices seems like an interesting bet, but I kind of thought Intel would suck them up last year.

Off topic, what are your favorite bets in the networking sector for pickings (ie. beaten down stock, excellent tech)?

I've heard a lot about Juniper (private). Do you know if mrvc has similar stuff with their new products?
thanks for any thoughts,
pigboy

It's like they just dismiss them (bravado perhaps?) when they make a very strong competitor.

Come on Sector!!! You remember John's line about big mergers don't work when he used it against ASND and Cascade. That is Chamber's style to a tee, IMHO. It is history repeating itself. CSCO bashed that deal about size, about geographic variance, about anything it could. Now they will try to do that to LU/ASND.

It is just CSCO being CSCO.
