Yup bullshit, just look at the reasoning:

The most significant weakness of this notification is that a subscriber has to continually take the telephone off-hook to determine if there is a stutter dial tone. Many messages are retrieved long after they have been left, and satisfaction with the voice messaging systems is less than ideal.

Transalation: If you need to check e-mail every hour you have to pick up the phone every hour.

The MessageAlert samples the line, and if a stutter dial tone is present, a bright red LED begins flashing.
Translation: You buy a device from them that goes off-hook every now and then - if it detects a stutter dial tone it lights an LED.
Looks like you have to pay the $8 for voice messaging anyway, but now you don't have to go to the bother of picking up the phone to here the tone - just look at the LED
This has to be a joke - right???????
I've got to read the rest carefully - but it sure sounds like telephony garbage to me. It seems to serve the same purpose as an answering machine LED indicator. Wonder how much answering machines go for for with only the LED indicator? You pay for the voice mail thru your RBOC - they hold the mail (voice or e-mail) and this device tells you you have it and you don't have to pick up the phone. Will it sell millions.

The rest I have to read more carefully - but it doesn't look promising at all. In fact it looks even worse then what I first envisioned. Tell me when to short it!
