When Bill Clinton first ran for the presidency as a Democratic hopeful, the major candidates, such as Cuomo, were scared off by Bush's stratospheric poll ratings. By mid- summer, Bush was faltering, and Clinton won the election. If you want to console yourself with the hit the Republicans are taking so long before the election, be my guest. Everything is still up in the air. The most recent NYTimes poll shows Republicans taking a hit, but it also shows that 67% favor the President enduring further punishment: removal, censure, or resignation (censure is on par with the removal/resign options combined!). The public mostly disapproves of the way the Senate is handling this, but they neglected to ask the basis for disapproval. I can tell you from visiting National Review Town Hall that conservatives are exasperated with the Senate for not being more aggressive, so the disapproval may break in either direction.
