THQ Rockets to the PC With 'Sinistar: Unleashed'

Arcade Cult Classic Enters 3-D Universe This Summer

CALABASAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 3, 1999--Game publisher THQ Inc. (Nasdaq/NM:THQI - news) Wednesday announced that it will release ''Sinistar(r): Unleashed,'' a space combat game based on the well-known '80s arcade classic ''Sinistar(r).'' ''Sinistar: Unleashed'' will be exploding onto personal computers throughout North America this June.

The original ''Sinistar'' was designed by the designer of the current arcade hit ''CarnEvil.'' ''Sinistar'' put players face-to-face with the diabolical Sinistar, who ruled the universe and elicited fear among players with bone-chilling terms such as ''Run coward'' and ''Beware, I live.'' The game was an instant cult classic.

''Sinistar: Unleashed'' takes this classic to a new breathtaking 3-D-accelerated universe while retaining the spirit of the original game design. Previously code-named ''Excession,'' ''Sinistar: Unleashed'' is being developed by GameFX(tm), a THQ subsidiary. This is the first game in THQ's strategy to produce high-end, technologically advanced games for the PC.

''We've combined this classic game with incredible breakthrough GameFX(tm) Technology to give 'Sinistar' and arcade action fans the game they've been hungering for on the PC,'' said Steve Ryno, chief creative officer, THQ. ''This title will catapult players into a lightning-fast 3-D space environment, bombarding them with visual effects that eclipse all other games.''

''What made the original a classic is that it was easy to learn, yet difficult to master,'' said C. Noah Davis, chief technology officer of THQ and general manager of GameFX(tm) Studio. ''We are focused on capturing that magic using many elements of the original, while showcasing the universe using our proprietary GameFX(tm) Technology.''

''Sinistar: Unleashed'' is an ultra fast-paced space action game. Using an array of upgradable weapons, players progress through the game blasting asteroids and collecting energy crystals. Managing crystals effectively will earn players the coveted weapons upgrades and power-ups. Players will battle through 24 single-player levels in their quest to kill the enemy Sinistar.

About the Original

The legendary ''Sinistar'' represented a number of ''firsts'' in game design. Originally debuting in 1983, the sitdown version of ''Sinistar'' was the first arcade game to successfully use digitized speech. ''Sinistar'' character's speech, including the trademark ''I hunger,'' was one of the most exciting aspects of the gameplay.

It was also the first game to use stereo sound, with two independent left and right soundboards, and to use a 49-way optical joystick. Today, the game is regarded as one of the most challenging games in arcade history. THQ has licensed ''Sinistar'' from the arcade giant, Midway Games Inc.

GameFX, a wholly owned subsidiary of THQ Inc., develops entertainment software utilizing proprietary hardware-accelerated video rendering engines and advanced development techniques. The GameFX(tm) Web site is located at gamefx.com.

THQ Inc. develops, publishes and distributes interactive entertainment software worldwide for a variety of hardware platforms including PC CD-ROM, and those manufactured by Nintendo and Sony. The THQ Web site is located at thq.com.
