Monsanto Uses Detectives, Ads to Police Its Seeds, Post Says

Bloomberg News
February 3, 1999, 10:48 a.m. ET

Washington, Feb. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Monsanto Co. is using
Pinkerton detectives and advertising the names of alleged
offenders to keep farmers from replanting seeds taken from its
genetically altered corn and soybeans, the Washington Post
reported. The crops are altered to resist pesticides or insects,
and farmers who use the Monsanto seeds must not only agree to buy
new seeds for every planting, they must also allow company
officials on their land to check for misuse, the paper said. The
company told the newspaper it needs to enforce the ''no replant''
agreement to protect the millions it has spent on developing the
seed, while some farmers who have been accused of seed piracy say
windblown pollen and spillover from grain trucks put telltale
crop DNA in their fields.

Although several European governments have restricted the
use of genetically engineered crops, their commercial planting
will be allowed on a limited scale next year in the U.K., the
U.K.'s farm minister said today.
