SmartMoney, The Wall Street Journal's Magazine of Personal Business, ran its annual survey of discount brokerage firms in its July, 1998 issue. The magazine examined over 200 criteria across 22 brokerage firms. Following is some of what SmartMoney said about Waterhouse Securities:
"[Waterhouse Securities is] the single best discount broker -- that is, the one firm with the best mix of price, product, service and reputation." According to the article, "Waterhouse's all-around excellence is no secret among do-it-yourselfers."
In addition to being named best overall for the second year in a row, Waterhouse Securities was named #1 in three categories:
#1 in On-Line Trading
"[Waterhouse webBroker:] It's particularly easy to navigate, offers unlimited free access to S&P stock reports and Zacks Investment Research, and allows you to transfer financial information into Quicken without manually reentering the data…. Finally, Waterhouse is one of the few firms to offer technical help via an 800 telephone number 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
#1 in Extra Services
"We took note of which brokerages offered 16 extra benefits, from free check writing to free stock research, and found that Waterhouse, last year's winner in this category, triumphed once again. For the second year in a row, Waterhouse's offerings gave it a perfect score in this category."
#1 in Fewest Extra Costs
"Whether it's opening an IRA, putting in a limit order or reinvesting dividends, Waterhouse leaves its customers unbruised by extra charges."
The October 1998 issue of Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine featured a survey of 16 online brokers. Kiplinger's reviewed these 16 firms in seven different categories. Here is what they had to say about Waterhouse:
"Waterhouse Best For Products And Services: Waterhouse rose to the top by offering almost all of the 22 bells and whistles we looked for. Not content with offering trading and a good no-transaction fee mutual fund program, Waterhouse fancies itself an alternative to your bank. "We consider ourselves a one-stop shop," says Frank Petrilli, Waterhouse CEO. With Waterhouse, your account is updated in real-time. You can screen stocks, trade by touch-tone phone, access real-time quotes, and get free debit and credit cards, free check-writing privileges and free dividend reinvestment." "Waterhouse Best For Mutual Funds: Waterhouse scored the best in this category. It not only has the most funds (1,023) in its NTF (No-Transaction-Fee mutual funds) program but also charges a middle-of-the road $25 transaction fee for buying no-load funds outside the NTF program." Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine (October 1998) "Cheap Frills" In its Third Quarter 1998 Internet Broker Scorecard, Gomez Advisors ranked Waterhouse Securities #1 in Customer Confidence. According to Gomez Advisors the leaders in this Customer Confidence category have a large capital base, track their web site availability and phone response time, have a well-trained customer service staff and disclose key information about trading rules and execution to their customers. Here is what they had to say about Waterhouse Securities:
"The site's recent facelift has put more resources at investors' fingertips, and their $12 trades are the lowest among the giant discount brokers."
"[Waterhouse] Could there be nicer people in this business?"
In the 1998 Bonus Internet Investing Issue, Worth magazine said the following about Waterhouse Securities:
"Of the sites we liked best, Waterhouse cost the least -- $12 for trades under 5,000 shares. It also provides an excellent range of mutual funds and doesn't skimp on the research features: charts, Standard & Poor's reports, earnings estimates and stock screens." Worth Bonus Internet Investing Issue (August 1998) "Trading Places"
In the July 1998 issue of Money magazine, under the heading "On-line Brokerage that will hold your hand," the magazine wrote:
"The one that combines hand-holding with the lowest price per trade: Waterhouse Securities, which charges just $12 for a market and limit order and has 130 branches." Money Magazine (July 1998) "On-line Brokerage that will hold your hand"
Kiplinger's Magazine ranked Waterhouse Securities "Best for Mutual Funds":
"Firms that scored high in this category not only have a big stable of no-load mutual funds you can buy without a transaction fee but also limit fees charged after a certain number of redemptions...Two factors pushed Waterhouse to the top: Waterhouse's fee of $25 to buy and sell $10,000 worth of no-load fund shares that are not part of the no-transaction-fee program beat White's $35. And there's no limit on no-transaction fee program redemptions at Waterhouse..." Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine (November 1997) "Best of the No-Frills Brokers"
Here's what Money Magazine had to say about Waterhouse Securities:
"...Waterhouse, one of four firms on our list to earn an A for low transaction prices, emerges from the pack. Its commissions were the lowest of any of the firms we surveyed. Yet its offerings were broad, including the third largest NTF network [No-Transaction-Fee Mutual Funds]. And its service wins high marks too, with an impressive amount of research available free or at low cost, nearly 100 branch offices providing general guidance to investors and a personal representative assigned to every account. Says founder and chairman Larry Waterhouse, who still personally takes calls from any client who asks to speak to him: ‘We're not the only firm to put the customer high on a pedestal, but we're second to none.' " Money Magazine (June 1997) "Smart Ways to Shop the New Financial Supermarkets"
SmartMoney, The Wall Street Journal Magazine of Personal Business, published an article "The Best and Worst Discount Broker," in its July, 1997 issue. Following are some of the things SmartMoney said about us:
"We've analyzed 21 leading firms. Our goal: to find the best combination of price, products and service." The Best Discount Broker: Waterhouse Securities
In addition to being named the best overall, Waterhouse Securities was named #1 in the category of Extra Services:
"Extra Services: What do you get for your money? That's what this category is all about. And the answer, according to the category winner's customers, is a lot." "We went looking for 17 perks – everything from free research materials to free check writing – and Waterhouse had a perfect score." In a Barron's survey, webBroker ranked #2 among the 26 on-line brokerage firms surveyed. No firm received a higher rating for Ease of Use or Reliability.
"...Waterhouse's webBroker is a well-designed site that provides investors with much information regarding their account status, as well as research and other investors' tools." Barron's (March 17, 1997)
