Web browser for the blind? MAJOR MISTAKE.

Our Data Coordinator is blind. I build my web pages, and run them by him to make sure the pages are accessible to all users.

Blind people who use computers have a screen reader that speaks anything on the Windows desktop. There are several existing browsers that speak, but require that you leave windows environ by launching another application. Totally extraneous.

Our data coordinator uses Explorer just fine. Reads Acrobat files no problem. While I prefer Netscape, and it works fine for him using his screen reader, he prefers Evil Bill's 'ware. Why would he want to leave his customary environment, that already reads everything for him? How would he launch the application without an existing screen reader?

What this product is for is ILLITERATES. I don't mean that in a disparaging way, I'm talking about people who can't read.

Since I also teach at a community college and am certified in High School, it would shock many people to know how many folks just can't read effectively enough to browse the web. These people still need information...

Up to now, the web has been a motivator to get students to learn to read and write.

If IBM gets the speech recognition fired up, and the screen reader really working well, then the written language may become as optional as Algebra as a life skill. Just and more MHz and ram. And that's progress!
