Prudential's Smith Still Bullish On Market For '99

NEW YORK (DOW JONES)--Thanks to rate cuts last fall, no inflation, low interest rates, a pick-up in the world economy and pretty good profits, Greg Smith, chief investment strategist at Prudential Securities, remains bullish on the market for 1999.

"We got a pretty good script," Smith said during a CNBC interview Wednesday.

Smith's ideal investment portfolio includes 75% stocks, 20% bonds and 5% in REITs, or real estate investment trusts.

For stock picks, Smith said he likes companies with strong earnings, including technology and communications companies. He cited AT&T Corp. (T), MCI Worldcom Inc. (WCOM) and Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO).

Smith added he expects the market to broaden in 1999.
Focusing on Japan, Smith said recent interest rate hikes there are an anomaly.
