And what was Japanese response? raise the interest rate

I guess Japanese government would not listen to Rubin or AG or any US officials. They don't have any trust in US. Last time (in 1993 or 1994) when dollar went down to 70 yen/dollar, Japanese bought a lot of US bonds. They drained their own capital and worsen the recession. This time they would act tough and reduce the spread between their bonds and US bonds to attract capital.
