Otis Rush Wins GRAMMY Award For Best Traditional Blues Album LOS ANGELES--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Feb. 24, 1999--"Any Place I'm Going," guitar legend Otis Rush's acclaimed debut on the House of Blues Music label, was awarded a GRAMMY for Best Traditional Blues Album, at ceremonies this evening in Los Angeles. "We are extremely happy for Otis Rush," said Steve Devick, president and CEO of Platinum Entertainment, Inc., parent company of the House of Blues Music label. "Hopefully this industry recognition will result in greater awareness of his legacy and current contributions to the blues." Rush won the GRAMMY over nominated albums by John Hammond, Robert Lockwood, Jr., Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson and "A Tribute to Howlin' Wolf." Recorded in Memphis, Tennessee, with co-producer Willie Mitchell, Rush's muscular vocals and visceral left-handed solos dominate his original tunes "Keep On Loving Me Baby," "Looking Back" and the title track, penned with acclaimed Grammy-winning songwriter Will Jennings. The album also includes songs written by R&B legends Marvin Gaye ("Pride and Joy") and Sam Cooke ("Laughin' and Clownin'"). Since 1956 Rush has been an international figure in the blues world. Along with contemporaries, Magic Sam and Buddy Guy, Rush has been heralded as a pioneer of Chicago's "West Side Sound," and has inspired the careers of such rock superstars as Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan. Rush is praised by The Riverfront Times as "an architect of the latter-day Chicago blues . . . the logical progression beyond Muddy Waters." Pulse magazine called "Any Place I'm Going" Rush's best performance in more than 20 years, his "deep, robust near-shout, summoning up flame from his belly."
