Japan Banks Reviewing Terms Of China-Bound Loans

<< IBJ, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi (8315) and Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank (8311) are among the major Japanese lenders to China, with each believed to have over 1 billion dollars in outstanding loans. They are reviewing their lending terms because more and more Chinese nonbank institutions have stopped making principal and interest payments since late December, the sources said.

As of the end of June 1998, the outstanding balance of loans made to China by foreign lenders stood at 59.3 billion dollars, of which 17.5 billion dollars comes from Japanese institutions, according to the Bank for International Settlements. >>
