I think the most important result is more long term-- the next time someone comes along with a threat to Microsoft, Microsoft won't be able to use the illegal and immoral tactics they used against Netscape, Intel, Sun, Real Networks, and Apple. The near term competitors are Novell, Sun, IBM, and Linux, and they all will be helped.

Secondary, the OEM's will be strengthened in their bargaining against Microsoft. That will result in lower revenues for Microsoft's staple products (OS's and Office).

Win2000 is, technology wise, turning out to be a huge failure. That wouldn't matter if Microsoft were allowed to steamroll it to everyone's desktop-- we'd all just have to pay the price and put up with the annoyances. That may not happen.
