(BSNS WIRE) GartnerGroup's Dataquest Says European PC Market Excelled in GartnerGroup's Dataquest Says European PC Market Excelled in 1998 as Shipments Increased 23 Percent

Business Editors/Technology Writers

EGHAM, United Kingdom--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 3, 1999--As personalcomputer prices continued to decline, total European PC shipments surpassed 26.1 million units in 1998, an increase of 22.5 percent over 1997 results, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, nc. (NYSE:IT).

Western Europe, which grew 26 percent in 1998, showed the biggest rowth in a decade. The overall PC market was driven by the consumer segment, with customers motivated to purchase PCs to get connected to the Internet and because of the affordability of the systems.

"The majority of markets witnessed most PCs being sold as a bundle, with one or more peripherals, such as a printer or scanner,"said Philip Williams, senior industry analyst for Dataquest's PC Quarterly Statistics Europe program. "Germany was the exception where PCs were sold purely according to what price point vendors could reach."

Compaq's market share in 1998 was double its nearest competitor (see Table 1). Dell posted the strongest growth rate, as its shipments increased more than 72 percent. Dell's growth was attributed to its execution, geographical expansion across the region, and success in both the notebook and entry-level server segments.

Dataquest said the professional market is now a stable, mature market, and it's not prone to the cyclical peaks and troughs of the consumer market. The professional segment is expected to maintain current levels of demand in 1999 as companies address year 2000 concerns.

"There is growing evidence that large corporations are simply replacing their PC installed base to get around the issues of the year 2000," Mr. Williams said. "We believe small and medium sized
enterprises will follow their example but only at the last minute, at
the end of the year."
Dataquest analysts will examine the future of the PC industry during the upcoming GartnerGroup's Dataquest Predicts 99 Conference to be held June 7-9 at the Hotel New York Convention Centre, Paris, France. Dataquest analysts will also provide their outlook for the other sectors of the high technology industry. Additional information on the event is available on the GartnerGroup Web site at
