Novell revs NetWare, releases NDS for Solaris

By Scott Berinato, PC Week Online
February 3, 1999 2:23 PM ET

Novell Inc. on Wednesday released the shipping version
of Novell Directory Services for Solaris 2.0 and
announced availability of Support Pack 1 for NetWare 5.0.

The Solaris application further distinguishes NDS as a strategic product separate from the Provo, Utah, company's network operating system. While NetWare is the OS for which NDS was built, the growing prominence of the directory as a key management application has led users to want to apply it to multiple operating systems. Novell recently introduced NDS for Windows NT version 2.0.

It's nearly impossible to attend a high-tech trade show or conference
without hearing--in hallways, booths and cafes--about the wonders and
growing potential of network directories. In just ten short years, they've grown from helpful utilities to indispensable network-management tools.

But the true promise of directories goes far beyond simplifying network management. In this editorial, Phil Montgomery of software vendor Netoria, Inc. explains why directories have become so important and discusses how they are making possible a whole new way of doing business.
