This is almost ancient history now, having occurred in the early 1990s, but I must set the record straight: Clayton Williams lost because a majority of Texas voters saw through his good-ole boy exterior to the bigoted and reactionary man that he truly is. The "relax and enjoy it" comment was revealing, but Ann Richards would have won regardless. She was the best leader this state has had since Sam Houston. Signed, Joel Irby, a liberal Austinite and Ann Richards supporter, in case you couldn't tell Houston was quite controversial in his day. He vociferously opposed Texas secession and led the doomed effort to keep Texas in the Union prior to the Civil War. Despite his brave leadership in freeing Texas from dictatorial Mexican rule ~1836, he wasn't too popular with most Texans in the 1860s. History has been kinder to Houston than to his Confederate opponents, however. DCF wrote: [Clayton Williams] made a stupid mistake and he paid for it. Unlike Chappiquidic for some liberals. But back to MA Richards, that stupid statement by Williams is the only reason she won. Only thing she had going for her was a big mouth.
