There's no alternative to apartments in the big urban areas. The reits will always have a captive market. I like cohen and steers stuff better than heebner. If reits haven't bottomed, they are close enough for me. There's half-dozen mobile home reits..I think Sam Zell's MHC is probably the biggest. Check out the new "mobiles"..they are downright plush. Termites, mold and dryrot don't like them very much, either. Every brokerage has mysteriously been "down" with "software upgrades" within the last two weeks.... hmmm...
