There are two ways for 3Com to go. One is put itself on sale. Another one to acquire other competitors to beef up the market shares. It looks like the Street believes that 3Com may go for the later one. The records of 3Com doing acquisitions were very very bad. It's indeed a loser collector. I think 3Com need another top head to lead the new acquisition.

Comments from CREDIT SUISSE FIRST BOSTON CORPORATION February 3, 1999

3Com Corporation (COMS, USD $44.125, STRONG BUY)Target (12 Months):$55
Intel NIC product introduction, did not feature expected price cut,
a positive for 3Com. Intel (INTC,$162.63,Strong Buy)*is competing
on features rather than price, in contrast to its price cuts of 1997.
We expect 3Com to enact its typical February price cuts; we believe
these actions are planned and will not affect the current quarter.
Current quarter is traditionally weak and we expect a higher than
usual degree of backend loading. As visibility into May quarter
improves, stock performance should improve. Annual EPS
