FT & E,
I have a problem with the death penalty for 2 reasons. One is as E said, it is sporadically applied thereby losing it's deterrent value. Secondly, there is too much evidence that innocent people are being convicted because law enforcement, prosecutor's and even judges deny the accused a fair trial. They do that by manufacturing evidence, blocking evidence favorable to the defense by various legal means with the cooperation of the judge, bringing forth false witnesses that they have made deals with, deals which are never revealed to the jury so their testimony can be weighed accordingly. A man was executed in Virginia some years ago who was innocent according to the story presented on 60 minutes. The black governor denied a 30 day stay so there would be time for the evidence to be looked at more closely. racism? Part of the evidence that was suppressed at his trial was that although his semen was in the dead girl (they had a relationship), there was another man's semen there also. The rapist murderer? The jury was not allowed to know that. There were other things wrong also. I have no faith in our system of justice.

Bob

FT,

Did you happen to read the Tribunes series on the Cook County prosecutors office a couple of months ago? Lots of dirty tricks to convict the innocent. The problem is our legal system has moved away from truth and justice toward won/loss records of lawyers on both sides. More game stats than justice.

Since Illinois has had the death penalty in the recent era, More people have been released as proven innocent from death row than have been executed.
