Cisco does not need DWDM. They clearly stated that on their CC yesterday, and said that they partner with CIEN, Pirelli and Nortel. They didn't even single out CIEN. CSCO also said that DWDM has been defined and COMMODITIZED. Cisco does not want commodities in its biz plan, and stated that they do not want to be like an IBM or Lucent and provide total solutions b/c that means being in low-margin businesses.
Listen to the CC in the Q & A.

Cisco is not the type to talk down a stock (or even talk about a stock) if they're planning on buying it. CSCO has stated that they thought about buying CIEN before, and decided against it for a bunch of reasons. CSCO could pay cash for CIEN if it wanted but it won't.

Our only hope for CIEN is one of those dumb European Old World telcos as LU has similar products and ASND to integrate, NT has similar prod + Bay, CSCO is not interested. COMS stock is depressed and only recently started to recover, and with USR disaster behind them, this is not going to hapen. COMS already has low margins, doesn't need CIEN.

Look for Ericcson, Alcatel or Siemens to save the day someday

Just my 2 cents...
