I have been told by Iridium Investor Relations that they do not know the cause of the failures, but they are not systemic ...and definitely not momentum wheel failures. To me this implies that someone knows more than this, and that would be Motorola, not Iridium. While I would prefer to know what's behind the failures, this is exactly the same answer I got last summer when some other birds failed. The contract to maintain the constellation is what got the holes filled then, and the planes spared (with the exception of plane 3, which is currently without a spare, though I believe one is being drifted over to it currently). More launches are coming under the contract, and I am satisfied with the company's assertion that what's important are the 66 satellites that carry my calls.
