nihilist,

You make so much sense. NOT. Let's just make a law that no one can have children anymore unless they can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the child will have a real nice cozy, cumfy, and trouble free life. Never mind that children grow up and overcome all sorts of obstacles to become whatever life gives them a chance at. And a few will even accomplish extraordinary things. But never mind, if they have to have a hard time, just kill them.

Bob

Nihil, your post about the plight of desperately poor women and the struggles they have as their lives spin out of control was a really wonderful one.

There are a lot of women at SI who believe that abortion should be legal, but would never have one themselves. I am one of those women, definitely. I sometimes wonder if the reason I would never have an abortion, though, has a lot to do with the fact that I am relatively affluent and simply never have to make the choices or experience the agonies of women who find themselves poor, without a loving mate, raped or otherwise abused, extremely young, or otherwise simply unable to give a child the love and protection it needs to grow up with a reasonable chance of a healthy, happy life. Even though I think I make my ethical decisions based on principle, I bet that experiencing the horrific realities that less fortunate women do might make a realist out of me in a hurry. And if I had an abortion under those circumstances, it would be in the same agony most of those women must feel, because they, too, love life, especially the life that grows inside them but which they cannot sustain.

Anyway, thanks for such beautiful writing.
